10 Tips for Homoeopathy Students

1.  Read the Organon yourself.  Read Chronic Diseases.  Read Hahnemann and Boenninghausen’s Lesser Writings.  You are not a baby, don’t stick to the pureed version.

2. Never let anything go unchallenged.  Ask why, and if you don’t get answers from your teachers look for them yourself.  This includes everything from the law of similars, to plastic cups, dosing methods, antidotes, choices of remedies, concepts of miasms.

3.  It is unbelievable how many answers you will find simply by reading Hahnemann’s writings.  He asked a lot of the questions you are asking, and dealt with most of the problems you deal with in studies and in the clinic.  These days you can do computer searches through Hahnemann’s writings to find the answers you need.  Dr. Google may be your best resource for homoeopathic research.

3.  When you get answers, check them with your own inherent common sense.  Does the answer make sense?  Is there something that doesn’t seem quite right?  Investigate till you are satisfied.  It will make you a better practitioner.

4.  Do not accept mystical/religious/spiritual/shamanistic/wiccan answers of the ilk: “it has deep mystical significance and cannot fully be understood by mere mortals”.  Homoeopathy is a simple, scientific method.  Case-taking with that in mind turns the work into something much cleaner, simpler and more successful.

5. Do not accept answers like: “I have 10-20-30-50 years experience as a homoeopath” as a final answer to any question.  Ask to see chapter and verse.  Sadly there are some very experienced homoeopaths and teachers of homoeopathy who speak with great authority but do not seem to know what they are talking about.

6. There are always issues that homoeopaths learn through their experience of treatment.  This may be valid – but don’t accept the anecdote or homily, look for sources.  Example?  there are homoeopaths who recommend dosing two doses, 24 hours apart, before re-assessing the case.  Asking why (from my experience) brought the answer “because I’m experienced and I told you so.”  However, if you work through provings you will discover that Hahnemann recommended this for certain remedies, and explains clearly exactly why.

7.  Let Hahnemann teach you homoeopathy before you exalt a homoeopathy guru or charismatic teacher in his place.  Get used to his style of writing, and you’ll find reading his work much easier than you thought it would be.  Then ask your teachers about his writings.  Hahnemann’s work is the starting place.

8.  If Aphorism 6 is not an essential part of your case-taking, make it so.  Go on, look it up, do the work, find the first essential question you must be able to answer in every case you take.

9.  The Organon is not an obscure philosophical work.  It is the first and only straightforward how-to manual of homoeopathy.  Read it again and again.  Not as a religious practice, but in order to recognize the issues Hahnemann was dealing with, and the explanations and solutions he offered.  You won’t find everything there, but you’ll find a lot more than you may expect.  There really is no need to re-invent the wheel.

10.  Let every homoeopathy teacher quake in their shoes when they hear you’ve signed up for their courses.  Be irritating, be very very irritating.  If you’re doing it in genuine search of truth, we will acknowledge that and become better teachers in order to make you better homoeopaths.  (if you’re doing it to be a pain in the rear…you will be kicked out… 🙂 )
